Safer Internet Day 05/02/2019

On Tuesday, 5th February, Northern House is joining the global Safer Internet Day campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology.

This year’s theme ‘Together for a better internet’ will be celebrated in over 130 countries, and see our pupils join hundreds of organisations right across the UK and globally to play their part in helping to create a better internet.

To celebrate the day, we are going to focus specifically on the issue of consent, and we aim to show pupils just how widely material online can be shared.

We will be part of a nationwide day of action involving the #SaferInternetDay2019 social media campaign and youth events where young people will have the opportunity to have their say about the issue of consent online.

Will Gardner, Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre and CEO of Childnet, said:

“Safer Internet Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together for a better internet. Whether you are a young person, parent, carer, school or organisation, we can all take positive actions to help make the internet a great and safe place. Hundreds of schools and organisations have pledged their support for Safer Internet Day and it is this collaboration that helps ensure Safer Internet Day has such a positive impact, reaching 45% of UK children in 2018 and growing year on year.”

Our ICT co-ordinator added, “It is scary to see the speed at which some pupils (and adults) will enter their information into a sign up box! We know issues arise in all schools when students have shared something with a friend which then leaks out into the wider community.  Children have to learn to be safe, and we have to enable that learning.  A day like this reminds us all that we have to raise awareness continually; it is never a job completed.”
